Calcined clay, also known as metakaolin when used as a pozzolan in concrete, offers several advantages in construction and other applications:

Improve Strength

Cement quality improvers can enhance the compressive strength of concrete, leading to more durable and structurally sound construction.

High Temperature Performance

Concrete incorporating metakaolin exhibits enhanced resistance to high temperatures, making it suitable for applications where fire resistance is important, such as in tunnel linings, fireproofing, and industrial facilities.

Mitigation of Alkali-Silica Reaction (ASR)

Metakaolin has been shown to mitigate the risk of alkali-silica reaction, a chemical reaction that can cause expansion and cracking in concrete due to the presence of reactive aggregates and alkalis in cement. By consuming excess alkalis and providing a denser matrix, metakaolin helps prevent the deleterious effects of ASR, improving the long-term durability of concrete structures.

Improve Durability

Enhance the resistance of concrete to environmental factors such as freeze-thaw cycles, chemical exposure, and abrasion. This improves the long-term durability of concrete structures.

Reduce Permeability

Metakaolin can help reduce the permeability of concrete by filling in pore spaces and creating a denser matrix. This improves the resistance of concrete to water penetration, chloride ingress, and other deleterious substances, leading to longer service life and lower maintenance costs.

Environmental Benefits

Allowing for the production of concrete with lower water-to-cement ratios. This not only improves the strength and durability of the concrete but also reduces the risk of shrinkage and cracking.
